Geothermal or Ground Source Heat Pumps are the same thing; their name is an indication of their source of heat which is from the ground or geothermal source. These types of heat pumps are the most efficient system you can buy. GSHP are 300%-450% efficient which means that for every dollar you spend in electricity you receive $3.00-$4.50 worth of heat. This is accomplished by installing in the earth a loop piping system. Water is circulated through the piping system and the heat pump. There are several reasons the geothermal heat pump is the most efficient.
With a GSHP the temperature above the ground has very little effect on the temperature below the ground. The result is a heat pump which will provide a constant heat output and efficiency no matter what the outside temps are.
The earth loop is the source of heat, so it is vital to be adequately plugged into the earth. Once this is accomplished a source of heat is available to efficiently heat our homes, domestic water, swimming pools, hot tubs, etc. There are several ways to install earth loops.
Domestic Hot Water from your water heater is the second largest energy consuming demand in the home. A GSHP will provide DHW at the same rate as heating your home. See CPM Cost Per Million Btu’s of heat page for more details. With a GSHP your DHW can also be heated with the heat pump. Air to air heat pumps don't provide this option.
Because the GSHP is located inside your home the life expectancy is higher because it is NOT exposed to the outside weather like an air to air heat pumps are.
